PS5, Xbox or PC racing wheel compatibility: how to get it right

A racing wheel does not work on every platform. On console, compatibility is granted model by model, and the same range can come in several versions. This guide covers the products in our catalogue, based on the platforms stated by the manufacturers and prices checked on 6 October 2026.

Why is console compatibility so strict?

On PC, a wheel base is recognised as a standard game controller. Sims support it through the manufacturer's driver. That is why the PC range is by far the widest.

On PlayStation and Xbox, a peripheral has to be compatible with the console. Manufacturers therefore produce dedicated versions. A base sold as PC only will not work on your console, even though it plugs in over USB.

Watch outDo not rely on the name of the range. Check the product page or the box for the list of platforms for the exact model you are buying.

Which racing wheel for PS5?

Several products in our catalogue are stated as compatible with PS5 and PS4, as well as PC. They cover every budget, from belt drive to direct drive.

The Logitech PRO Racing Wheel, an 11 Nm direct drive, comes in a PlayStation/PC version at €999.99. Logitech lists it as PlayStation/PC without specifying console generations on its product page. Our best PS5 racing wheel ranking compares these options.

Which racing wheel for Xbox?

On Xbox, the options in our catalogue follow two routes. The first is dedicated Xbox/PC versions of well-known models. Thrustmaster sells a T248 Xbox/PC and a T598 Xbox/PC at the same price as the PlayStation versions, and Logitech offers Xbox/PC versions of the G923 and the PRO Racing Wheel.

The second route is bases that work on Xbox as long as a licensed wheel is fitted. The Fanatec CSL DD 8 Nm (€429.95) and the Fanatec ClubSport DD (€599.95) work on Xbox with a Fanatec wheel carrying the Xbox licence, according to Fanatec. The MOZA R16 Ultra (€549) is Xbox compatible only through the ESX wheel, according to MOZA.

TipFor pedals, the MOZA CRP2, a load cell brake rated up to 200 kg, is stated by MOZA as compatible with PC and Xbox. It was listed at €399 on 6 October 2026.

See our best Xbox racing wheel ranking for a reasoned selection.

PC-only wheel bases and bundles

Many products are stated as PC only. That includes most high-end wheel bases. They are not suitable if you race on console.

On PC, you therefore have access to the whole catalogue. Our best PC racing wheel ranking and the best direct drive wheel base page help you choose. For a wider view of every model, browse the racing wheels catalogue.

Traps to avoid when buying

  • Buying the PlayStation version for an Xbox, or the other way round: both versions often sell side by side at the same price.
  • Assuming an Xbox-compatible Fanatec base works with any wheel: you need a wheel with the Xbox licence.
  • Thinking that high-end USB pedals work on their own on console: they often have to go through the base.
  • Confusing the PC Only version of a wheel, sometimes cheaper, with a console version.
  • Forgetting that a PS5 base is not necessarily Xbox compatible, as with the ClubSport DD+, for which Fanatec does not mention Xbox.

Logitech, for example, sells a PC Only version of the G923, listed at €279 when we checked, alongside the PlayStation and Xbox versions. It does not work on console.

Switching platform later: how to plan ahead

If you are torn between console and PC, choose a model that covers both. Every console version in our catalogue also works on PC. The reverse is not true.

Modular ecosystems offer another kind of flexibility. With Fanatec, the Xbox support of a CSL DD depends on the wheel, so changing the wheel can be enough. To build a consistent package, use our rig builder, then read our guide to sim racing games on PC and console.

If you are just starting out, our budget beginner sim racing setup guide puts these compatibility rules into budget tiers, from the first bundle to the first cockpit.
